Held at the Forum, Barrow-in-Furness, SkillsFest gave children and young people the chance meet businesses and explore skills needed for the workplace.

In 2018 over 4000 young people, parents and members of the public attended the premier careers event for Furness on Saturday 24th February.

With over 50 exhibitors to choose from in areas from business, education, universities and youth organisations the event had a great atmosphere with people of all ages coming to learn more about the opportunities available to them.

Guest speaker sessions were held throughout the day from Key Note Speaker Andrew Bernard, BAE Systems, and Oxford university. These were a hit with young people and their parents with some attending more than one (some even attending the BAE session twice!) and queues waiting to attend.

Big organisations such as BAE and GSK were in attendance with interactive activities for people of all ages to take part in and new organisations including DW Sports, MHI Vestas and Halifax were in attendance this year to showcase the opportunities in the area.

A well attended event

The event was supported by Kick Start pupils from Furness Academy who acted as Skills Experts on the day which including giving tours of the event to MP John Woodcock and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bill McEwan.

Today has confirmed that I do want to go to Oxford more than I did yesterday… I will use what I have learned to try and apply there

SkillsFest in the press

The main question I was worried about was picking a course and then not being able to get a job at the end so it was good to look around upstairs and find out the different jobs you can do after a course, so that's helped a lot I think
